TYPOGRAPHY OF NEWS
STRAIGHT NEWS IS NOT THE ONLY WAY TO PRESENT INFORMATION.
One thing that i learned in Desmond Lamptey's introduction to journalism class this semester that would stay with me for a better part of my life is that straight news is not the only to interact with the society as a journalist.
There are 5 ways by which a journalist can share information to the public namely, straight news, feature article, editorials, commentary or column and interviews. Straight news is a type of news that gives information to the public. The information given in this type of news are important and just straightforward, they do not necessarily need interpretation. Example is the report on the death of the former President John Evans Atta Mills.
A journalist can interact with the society through feature articles. This type of news usually beyond just passing information, but also does in depth analysis. They also draw attention of stakeholders to a particular issue. Here the journalist can include their honest opinions, about the matter but must be based on facts.
Editorials are also another way by which a journalist or a media house can interact with the society. Editorials are usually the stance of a newsroom or a media house on a newsroom or a media house on a particular topic and not that of an individual journalist.
Through Commentary and Column, the journalist can also interact with the society. As the name suggests, the journalist uses commentary on a particular issue with their personal style as a catalyst. Opinions here must not be fictitious but that of facts and figures to support your argument.
Interviews also constitute ways by which a journalist can interact with the society. They ask and probe about issues that affects the life of ordinary people. This form of journalism can also be used to sample the views of people on a particular matter.
In conclusion, the typology of journalism has been clearly slept out in this article and the notion that straight news is the only way by which a journalist can interact with the the society has been debunked. It is now clear that straight news, feature articles, editorials, commentaries and interviews all constitute the TYPOLOGY OF JOURNALISM.
