ARTICLE ONE: PEOPLE'S RIGHTS TO TRUE INFORMATION The GJA code of ethics were discussed in our introduction to journalism class. The class was divided into groups for each group to work on some chapters of the code of ethics. My group discussed the chapter one of the GJA code of ethics. "People's right to true Information" states that it is the duty of every journalist to write and report the truth, bearing in mind his duty to serve the public. The public have the right to unbiased, accurate, balanced and comprehensive information as well as express themselves freely through the media. A journalist should make adequate enquiries and cross-check his facts. The rules are clear in a simple/ layman English the question now is do journalists present the truth as they are supposed to? What Happened To The Market Place Function of Journalism ? In one of my Introduction to journalism classes, at my lecturer took pains to explain the roles of journalism to the class. One function of journalism kept me asking questions. After discussing the above five functions of journalism I realised that one of these journalistic functions was not being properly practised by some Media houses in Ghana. This function I am talking about is the marketplace function. Yes your guess is as good as mine. The marketplace function as discussed in the Introduction to Journalism class simply meant that media houses should provide a platform for the buying and selling or trading of ideas. One thing that i learned in Desmond Lamptey's introduction to journalism class this semester that would stay with me for a better part of my life is that straight news is not the only to interact with the society as a journalist.
